Why is an ADHD Diagnosis Important for Adults in Hong Kong?

You do not need to diagnose ADHD unless it causes problems. Many people handle their ADHD symptoms well. But adulthood can bring new challenges as life gets busier — such as raising a family or taking on a more demanding executive job in a fast-paced city like Hong Kong.

The term ADHD can be misunderstood. People with ADHD can often hyperfocus on things they like, which can help them succeed. However, they struggle to focus on tasks they find mundane. This is especially challenging for school children who must study a wide range of academic subjects.

How ADHD Manifests in Daily Life

ADHD exists at the far end of the normal attention spectrum. Some people manage it with support from others — such as spouses who manage the home and children, or assistants who help with schedules. While people with ADHD often find it hard to stay organised, they thrive if things have a clear structure.

Furthermore, individuals with ADHD often crave activity and stimulation; they may feel bored or unhappy when trying to relax. While their risk-taking and rapid decision-making can propel their careers forward, it can also create underlying friction.

Why Patients Seek Help at Our Central Clinic

Most patients come to see me at Optimal Family Health for secondary issues like anxiety, fatigue, trouble sleeping, or addiction, rather than explicitly seeking an ADHD assessment. Many only discover they have ADHD after a comprehensive medical review.

  • Anxiety: Triggered by the continuous stress and immense effort of managing and masking their condition.

  • Fatigue: This often stems from the extra mental energy required to work or study with ADHD. Always consider this possibility in teenagers if no other clinical cause is found.

  • Sleep Disturbances: People with ADHD frequently have trouble sleeping because their minds are always active. Treating ADHD properly usually helps patients sleep better.

  • Addiction & Habits: Individuals with ADHD are statistically more likely to develop habits like drinking, drug use, or smoking, often as a form of self-medication (for instance, substances like cocaine provide a strong, temporary boost of dopamine).

As a family doctor, I must recognise ADHD to treat these related issues effectively. Missing the diagnosis complicates long-term clinical care.

Modern Approaches to ADHD and ADD Treatment

It is worth noting that ADHD and ADD are now considered the same condition. ADD is simply more internalised and harder to spot. People with ADD often do not realise their constant, rapid mental activity is unusual because it has always felt normal to them. Of course, external hyperactivity is much easier to recognise.

Some patients use stimulant medication to help them. When managed correctly, this can significantly improve their daily lives by making it easier to focus, avoid being late, and stay organised.

I finish with a few insightful quotations from people living with ADHD:

“People don’t see the struggle for motivation that goes on inside my head. They only see the mess I made, the deadline I missed, the text I forgot to respond to.”
“I have ADHD, so I’m either hyper-focused or totally distracted—there’s no in-between. Why finish one project when you can start five more?”
“No off button, 100 thoughts at 100 miles per hour every waking minute.”
“Having ADHD turns everyday tasks into extreme sports.”
